Start with the instrument and acquisition date
Equity disposals, mutual-fund redemptions and fund distributions should not automatically be put in one tax category. Identify the taxpayer, instrument, acquisition lot, disposal date and relevant regime. NCCPL publishes guidance on the CGT system and its role in calculating and collecting tax within that regime. Consult the guide for the applicable tax year; a TY2026 table is not evidence that every TY2027 disposal uses the same treatment.
Create a lot-level record
Keep contract notes, purchase costs, quantities, corporate-action adjustments, sale proceeds, fees and disposal dates. Reconcile these with broker, fund manager and NCCPL statements as applicable. Preserve opening holdings when changing brokers. A missing cost is a record problem to investigate, not permission to insert an estimated amount that creates a desired gain.
Evaluate a strategy before executing it
Compare the intended investment outcome, transaction expenses, tax treatment, liquidity and risk. A tax-motivated sale can change market exposure and create costs greater than the expected benefit. Loss adjustment, carryforward and rate eligibility are subject to the governing rules and evidence; do not assume all investment losses can offset every type of income. Obtain a specific review before relying on a loss-harvesting plan.
An example of a useful decision sheet
A fictional investor holds two lots of the same security purchased on different dates. A decision sheet lists each lot’s quantity, supported cost, market value and relevant rule. It also identifies fees and the intended allocation after the sale. This is more informative than comparing gross price gains alone. Any assumed disposal-order convention must match the applicable regime rather than the investor’s preferred spreadsheet result.
Close the annual reconciliation
Match holdings, realised transactions, distributions, tax collected and certificates to the annual tax workpapers. Investigate differences between book profit and a collection statement before filing. Keep market decisions separate from accounting corrections and avoid promises of guaranteed tax-free returns. This guide explains record preparation and review questions; selecting a fund or security requires an assessment of the investor’s circumstances.
