Frequently asked questions

Tax, registration and accounting FAQs

General answers to common questions. The correct treatment can change according to the taxpayer, period, transaction and current law.

These answers are educational and do not replace case-specific advice. Dates, rates and procedures should be checked against current official sources.

Tax filing

Who is required to file an income tax return in Pakistan?

The requirement depends on the Income Tax Ordinance, taxpayer status, income, assets and other conditions for the relevant tax year. A person should review the current legal requirements and their own facts rather than rely only on income level.

What records are commonly needed for return filing?

Common records include salary or business income, withholding certificates, bank information, rental or investment income, expenses, assets, liabilities and major transactions. The exact checklist depends on the taxpayer.

What is a wealth statement?

A wealth statement reports assets, liabilities, personal expenses and movement in wealth for the relevant period. In many individual cases it must reconcile with declared income and expenses before the return can be completed.

Can a late return still be filed?

A return may generally be filed after the original deadline, but late filing can have consequences. The applicable law, surcharge, active-taxpayer treatment and current FBR procedure should be checked for the relevant year.

Registration and business

What is NTN registration?

NTN or taxpayer registration identifies a person or organisation in the FBR system. For individuals, CNIC commonly functions as the registration number after registration, while organisations receive the applicable registration details.

Should I register as an individual or a company?

The correct structure depends on ownership, risk, investment, tax, compliance cost and future plans. A sole proprietor and a company are legally and operationally different, so the choice should be made after considering the complete business situation.

What is the difference between an SMC and a private limited company?

A Single Member Company has one member and requires the arrangements applicable to an SMC. A private limited company has at least two members. Both are incorporated through SECP and have ongoing compliance obligations.

Who may need sales tax registration?

The answer depends on the nature of supplies, turnover, business category and whether federal or provincial sales tax applies. Registration should be assessed against current rules and the relevant authority.

Bookkeeping and reporting

Why is bookkeeping important for tax filing?

Reliable books help explain income, expenses, assets, liabilities and tax deductions. Poor records can lead to incorrect returns, missed deductions, unresolved reconciliations and difficulty responding to notices.

What is included in a bookkeeping cleanup?

A cleanup may include reviewing the chart of accounts, categorising transactions, reconciling banks, correcting duplicates, identifying missing information and preparing a usable trial balance. Scope depends on the condition of the records.

Does QTax Online provide statutory audits?

QTax Online can assist with bookkeeping, schedules and financial statement preparation support. A statutory audit or assurance opinion must be issued by an appropriately licensed professional.

Website and calculators

Are the calculators official FBR calculators?

No. They are independent estimation tools provided by QTax Online. They should be checked against current law and professional advice where the result is important.

Why can the final tax differ from the calculator?

Actual tax may differ because of exemptions, credits, withholding adjustments, minimum tax, special rates, multiple income sources or changes in law. The calculator only uses the inputs and assumptions programmed into it.

Is information submitted through the contact form confidential?

Contact information is used to respond to the enquiry and maintain necessary records. Do not send passwords, PINs, one-time codes or card details through the form. See the Privacy Policy for details.

Does sending a message create a professional engagement?

No. An engagement begins only after the scope, information required, fee and conditions are agreed.
